Una nueva forma de evaluar la toxicidad de los productos cosméticos en los corales

Synopsis

Given the growing concern about the toxicity of certain UV filters on reef-building corals, in Helioscience, a testing laboratory specialized in sun protection, we have established a strong collaboration with aquaculture experts to propose a suitable methodology for cosmetics. In addition to a bleaching assessment, we measure the impact of any cosmetic ingredient or formula on the growth rate of different coral species to reach a more accurate conclusion on toxicity. The combination of our expertise in cosmetics, marine biology and ecotoxicology allows us to provide fine results for acute and chronic toxicity in coral species. The aim of the workshop is to present what corals are, how cosmetic products impact their development and what solutions exist.
