Synopsis

Firmness and elasticity evaluations following cosmetic applications are among the most common claims of these products. The standard procedures used for obtained these results are performed using suction methods (for example the cutometer) or by a hair blow system to deform the skin and calculate firmness parameters in 3D (Dynaskin).
A new method presented at the Innovation in Portuguese at the Cosmetorium conference is able to calculate the deformation of the skin following extreme movements (mechanical or using a hair blow system) in a dynamical way.
60 subjects were subjected to the extreme movements procedures (a) a mechanical deformation – an extreme smile, and b) a hair blow procedure). The subjects were filmed using a High Speed Camera (Ix230) at 4000fps and the time for recovery of the skin was calculated. A skin suction method was also performed on the lower face area using the Cutometer (R0 and R2 values on the sagging area).
A higher sensitivity of the dynamical methods was obtained vs the cutometer data, probably because the cutometer respond less in the sagging less firm areas. The dynamical method also reflect the perceived effect of the firmness and the elasticity.
