Biography

Bachelor (M.Sc.) in biology (1978) from the University of Barcelona. Phd. in Philosophy. In Biochemistry (1982) from the same university. Postdoctoral fellow, Prof. Emilio Herrera’s Laboratory, Research Department, Ramón y Cajal Hospital, Madrid (1982-83). Associate Researcher, Laboratory of Prof. Neil B. Ruderman, Department of Medicine, Boston University (1983-86). Assistant professor of biochemistry and molecular biology, Faculty of Biology, University of Barcelona (1986-1991). Visiting Professor, Laboratory of Prof. Paul F. Pilch, Department of Biochemistry, Boston University School of Medicine, (1988). Associate Professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, University of Barcelona (1991 to date). Visiting Professor, Laboratory of Prof. Paul F. Pilch, Department of Biochemistry, Boston University School of Medicine, (1992). Member of different advisory committees.
The research activity focused on the biology of glucose transporters and the elucidation of the molecular mechanisms involved in the development of insulin resistance, obesity and type 2 diabetes mellitus.
He has directed 20 doctoral theses, has published more than 160 articles (PubMed) and has received 1,500 citations in 52 articles in the last 10 years (28.9 citations per article) in the field of Biology-Biochemistry (ISI Essential Science Indicator, ISI Web of Knowledge). The research activity has led to the presentation of 10 patents, eight of them in operation by different companies.
He has co-founded several biotechnology companies. “Boehringer Prize” of the Spanish Society of Biochemistry (1991). “Lilly” Young Researcher of the Spanish Diabetes Society (1992). Research Prize, Generalitat de Catalunya (2001).
