Synopsis

Nicomenthyl (INCI:Menthyl nicotinate), made in Italy by Multichem R&D, is a new multifunctional, sensorial cosmetic ingredient that activates skin microcirculation. It has proven to be effective as an antioxidant, anti-pollutant, detoxifying and protective agent. Full scale in vitro studies have demonstrated menthyl nicotinate’s fast penetration kinetics through the skin, and how its subsequent hydrolysis releases its original components menthol and niacin (vitamin B3) within 24 hours of its application. The total release of niacin by Nicomenthyl was analyzed at different time points, and the release curve was plotted evidencing the highest level of dermal delivery so far known. Niacin slow diffusion in the underlying skin layers, where it interacts with the epidermal and dermal biological structures, without causing any irritation or sensitization, was also studied. Results evidenced its fundamental role as precursor of the coenzyme NAD (nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide). NAD is essential to all cellular processes involved in immune response and repairing DNA damage caused by UV radiation or aggressive chemicals.

These scientific studies are of great interest for cosmetic formulations: applications containing Nicomenthyl at concentrations of 0,5 – 3%, can sustain anti-pollution, anti-aging, anti-free radicals, sun-damage repair, and hair loss prevention efficacy claims.
