Synopsis

The surge of tourism in the Douro Valley region over the last few years, has increased the opportunities of new tourism driven businesses. There has been a considerable increase in the amount of luxury resorts as well as the need to offer tourists an enlarged experience with Douro Valley treasures. The powerful anti-oxidant properties of vine leaves and stems is well known by the scientific community and we all know successful cases of cosmetic products vine based and worldwide brands based on this concept. This was the starting point for a wine and vine based cosmetic line of products and SPA experiences. An association of 3 parties begun a joint venture, putting together the scientific knowledge (Portuguese University), a partner with cosmetic formulation experience and regulation (Cosmetek) and finally the major party, the “raw material” supplier, marketing and distribution partner, a well known Quinta do Douro, rated as one of the best Porto’s wine stakeholder and a fast growing party in the Douro Wine business. This partnership is still in its early days but already drawing a lot of people and expectations!

The second instance is also a case of technology/scientific knowledge transfer between a University research center – Faculty of Pharmacy of the University of Porto and Cosmetek – together we are working on the potential of using olive oil tree leaves extracts as a key ingredient formulating skin care cosmetics. Olive oil is already a well known and valued ingredient, the goal is to use the sub products also as valuable cosmetic ingredient.

Cristiano Ronaldo perfumery and toiletries products have been a success since the first line of this brand, “Legacy”, was launched. Following brands have been a fully cooperation between the company that holds the image license for cosmetics, Éden Parfums (UK), the company that manages all the logistics, design and suppliers, The Fragrance Force (Spain) and Cosmetek (Portugal), for regulatory affairs and formulation. This has been a full time cooperation of which “Legacy – Private Edition”, “CR7 Red Label” and the following “CR7 Play it Cool” have resulted from.

Finally, an emerging cosmetic ingredient, CBD oil. What has been niche market is quickly turning into a mass market. Cosmetek is currently committed with a multinational company that produces medicinal cannabis in order to develop a new brand of CBD oil based cosmetics.
