Synopsis

Formulating sunscreens with good performance can be a demanding task. It is desirable to take care of new trends, but at the same time costs should be kept at a reasonable level. The first point to be considered is to employ stabilizers when photolabile UV absorbers are used. There are a number of registered filter molecules which can fulfil this task. However, there are also photostabilizers on the market which indeed do stabilize, but at the same time also act as UV absorbers, however without being registered as such. In order to further optimize the protection efficacy different ways may be followed. To a certain extent it can be helpful using UV filters for both, the oil and the water phase of the formulation. There is experimental evidence that for certain formulation types a better film homogeneity then can be achieved. Another concept is the use of scattering particles. Scattering of the UV light causes an increase of the average pathlength of that radiation, leading to stronger absorption and an increase of the sun protection factor.
